Flash Head like Sony Alpha

Dear Nikon,

Can you make a flash head like the latest Sony Alpha?

Thanks,

The new sony flash with a head that turns sideways is an obvious gimmick with no real practical use.

There are two potential reasons one would want to change the flash head's orientation. First is to move it further off axis from the lens to help combat red eye and some other reflections. The Sony unit is actually moving the head closer to the lens in either of it's sideways positions, which is the opposite of what you want to counter red eye.

The second reason you'd want to change the orientation of the flash is to simplify bouncing when the camera is in on it's side in portrait/vertical position. The Sony flash isn't an improvement here either, since all the other flashes with rotating heads on the market right now accomplish the same thing with a much less complex mechanism. Furthermore, when using the Sony to bounce this way or even for direct lighting, the Sony's light pattern will be rotated 90 degrees from the scene, wasting 50% of the light projected since it will be outside the frame.

It's obvious that the Sony design came from a board room and not the mind of an experienced photographer.
